Beta-glucuronidase, also written β-glucuronidase, is an enzyme that removes glucuronic acid from certain compounds. In the gut, microbial enzymes can participate in processing substances that enter the intestine. A stool activity result is not a direct measurement of blood estrogen or liver function.

Why the enzyme is discussed with estrogen
Laboratory research has shown that some gut microbial beta-glucuronidase enzymes can reactivate particular estrogen compounds. That establishes a biochemical mechanism under study. It does not validate a GI-MAP result as a diagnosis of “estrogen dominance,” a cancer-risk score or a personalized hormone-treatment tool. [1]
What GI-MAP reports
The intestinal-health section includes a beta-glucuronidase activity measurement. This differs from the panel’s microbial DNA quantities. A high activity value does not identify which organism contributed most, nor does it measure every step of hormone processing. [2]
What high or low activity cannot establish
A high flag cannot show that the enzyme caused a symptom, that toxins are building up in the body or that a supplement is required. A low result does not prove impaired hormone production or a need to raise the enzyme.
The assay’s reference range belongs to that laboratory method. Values from another stool test, a genetic enzyme disorder investigation or a research experiment may not use the same units or answer the same clinical question.
How to discuss a proposed intervention
Ask what health outcome is being targeted, what evidence supports the intervention for that outcome and how benefit would be assessed. Lowering an enzyme number is not automatically equivalent to improving hormone symptoms or reducing disease risk. Do not change prescribed hormone therapy on the basis of this stool marker alone.
Common questions
Can this result diagnose high estrogen?
No. It measures a stool enzyme activity, not circulating hormone concentrations.
Does it tell me which bacterium to eliminate?
No. An aggregate enzyme measurement does not identify a single causal organism or establish that eradication is appropriate.
